Some Information on Chrome Rims

Chrome rims are a quick way to dress up your car or truck. Instead of the traditional black rim covered by a hubcap, these wheels are designed to be exposed without a hubcap. The shiny display rims catch the light easily, whether it is day or night. They look especially good when they are mounted with low-profile tires. You can make your car look like a show vehicle simply by adding a set of special rims to the tires. Many new sports cars today are sold with chrome rims already in place.

Instant Class

If you’ve ever lost a hubcap and had to drive around with the ugly wheel rim showing, you know that the tire has traditionally been the least attractive part of any car. Hubcaps come in several varieties, but very few are classy or attractive. Polished chrome rims, however, are eye-catching and add another element of sparkle to any vehicle. You can install rims on a sports car, truck, SUV, or any other type of car that you want to show off. Many collectors like to install rims on their cars to prepare them for car shows.

Save Your Pennies

The only bad news about chrome rims is that they don’t come cheap. The rims themselves can cost over $200 each, which can come to $800 for an entire set. Buying the rims isn’t the only expense, however. Once you own them, you have to have all of your tires re-mounted onto them. If you’re good at mounting tires, this step won’t cost you any extra. Most people will probably need to take the car to a mechanic or tire shop to have the tires mounted on the rims, so be sure you factor in that extra cost when you consider your budget.

Find Cheaper Chrome Rims

There are some places where you can track down less expensive chrome rims. You’ll have to do a little leg work, but there are discounted rims out there. The first place to look is in your local newspaper classified section. You may luck into an estate sale that includes tire rims at a greatly reduced price. Online auction sites are another great place to shop for used rims. Be careful to pay attention to the shipping costs, though, because sometimes the sale price can be doubled by expensive shipping. There are online stores where you can find discounted rims as well. A little research on the internet may save you hundreds of dollars.

Repair Options

Since the chrome rims are highly polished, it is easy for them to become scratched or dull from daily use on the road. Most automotive stores sell chrome spray paint, which can be used to effectively cover large blemishes or scratches on your rims. If you have very small areas that need to be fixed, you can buy chrome paint in a can and use a touch up brush to cover the scratches. After painting your rims, polish them carefully with a buffing cloth.
