It's Not Easy But Not Impossible

Buying a used car is no easy task. It requires time, energy, and patience, as well as a decent knowledge about various makes and models of cars. If you are a first time buyer, with little or no experience dealing with used cars, don't panic; follow the simple steps listed in this article and you will be closer to obtaining the used car that is right for you.

To begin with, it is important to determine what your price range is. Knowing the limits of what you are willing to pay for a used car will help you to narrow the field in terms of what and where to look. If your price range is negotiable, and you are interested in searching for specific brands of used cars for sale, then you still need to consider the price of the cars that you find.

The prices of used cars vary considerably, based on the make and model of the car in question, as well as factors such as the condition of its body and motor, the number of miles that the previous owner clocked, and the car's average resale value within the present used car market.

In order to determine the ballpark figure at which cars of a particular make and model sell, you will need to do some specific research. One universally reliable source for this information is known as the Blue Book. This book is a guide that is published annually, and states price ranges for used vehicles. Other researching options include researching the given make and model of car online, to determine the average selling price.

Research, Research, Research...

Online research can be valuable for a number of additional reasons, when considering used cars for sale. By researching the make and model, not only will you be able to determine average selling prices, you will also be able to identify common issues that car owners face with the specific make and model of car that interests you. For instance, a certain car's engine life will inevitably be taxed after a given number of years. Doing some independent researching can help you to anticipate what type of work a car may need shortly after you acquire it.

If you are purchasing your used car from a reputable dealer, there will likely be some type of warranty backing your purchase, and it is normal to be able to request an account of the history of the car. For instance, the dealer should be able to provide the number of previous owners, as well as the work that has been previously done on the car. These types of assurances are helpful for inexperienced individuals with little or no knowledge about used cars. Typically however, used cars for sale from dealers will be slightly more expensive, to account for the fact that the dealer has facilitated the buying process.

Looking for used cars for sale by owner can be a more tricky process, simply because there is frequently no contract involved, and to some extent, you are forced to put your trust into the good conscience of the owner. There are several successful private used car sales performed daily, but occasionally the new owner might get stuck with a car for which they ended up paying too much.

If you are not familiar with the main points to look for when purchasing a used car, it is advisable to bring a friend along to help determine whether the car is worth the asking price. Also, do not be afraid to request to have the car inspected by a mechanic. If the seller has nothing to hide, then this step should not be a problem.

Usually I look on kelly blue book. I always insure the car right away after buying, as well as purchasing a warranty on it.
